If you are plotting to do the testing for paternity for your own personal satisfaction then you can buy a home testing kit but if you plot to take legal action on the basis of the results like changing the name on the birth certificate or filling for child support, you will have to go to a registered clinic and have the test done.

Using the test for legal purpose has lot of legal documentation to be done but in a home based test if you want to do it for the peace of mind and on having a more stable future it can be useful. Just collect the sample and send it to a company and find the results in maximum three days of average time but some companies take longer time to determine and send you the results.
